Entry #629

I had an interview with the local paper today, for the graphic design position I applied for. Since getting the interview, Adam and I have been discussing logistics (making budgets, etc.) of a move to Torrington, but most of it rode of the assumption that the position would pay like any respectable graphic design position. In NYC, I think I could settle for at least $32k (but shoot for $35k and possibly get it); since cost of living here is a little less (rent's cheaper, but you need a car), I was hoping for at least $27.5k but hoping for $31k.

Well, that's not going to happen. The paper only wants to pay hourly, and only around $10/hr at that. I don't know how they expect people to support themselves on that, especially after going to school for four years to learn the ins and outs of the software and the concept of design. But I guess most of their designers don't have that type of formal education in design; it's garnered through years of work experience and classes at the community college.

They're supposed to let me know what the exact figure is ($10/hr was a guess-timate and the person I interviewed with had to discuss it with her boss) and I don't know what to do. Adam kind of had his heart set on moving to CT and getting away from the city, and to be honest, so did I. But I feel like I'm selling myself short if I'm to accept such a measly offer. If they up it to $12/hour, or maybe $13, we could probably get by, but I don't want to just "get by"... I think I've worked too hard these past four years to just "get by."

*sigh* Life kinda sucks sometimes... especially when you want something so much.

The atmosphere at the paper seemed cool... extremely laid back. The people seemed good-natured and fun. I just don't know if I can afford to live on those wages.

I hung out with JT tonight... went to the chinese buffet and scooted around on his motor scooter. it was nice to get out of the house, and even nicer to see JT again. We sat outside Big Lots and chatted about culture and psychology and economics for hours.

I'll post again once I figure out what I'm doing, job-wise.

Annoying, Identity-Affirming Quiz Result of the Moment:

elf
You are Form 6, Elfin: The Wyld

"And The Elfin saw the evil and misjudgement in the world and shot her arrow at the sky. Bolts of lightning struck the earth and gave the world balance and growth."

Some examples of the Elfin Form are Demeter (Greek) and Khepry (Egyptian). The Elfin is associated with the concept of growth and balance, the number 6, and the element of water. Her sign is the half moon.

As a member of Form 6, you are a very balanced individual. You can easily adapt to most situations and you may be a good social chameleon. You aren't afraid of changes in your life, but sometimes you evolve too rapidly, leaving others to think that you are leaving them behind. Elfin are the best friends to have because they are open minded.
