Name: "Operation Register"
What? A symbolic protest to empower youth and call for youth enfranchisement.

Symbolic protests were used successfully to push for the right to vote for
African Americans in the South in the 1960's.

YouthSpeak will use the same type of protests to push for a reduction in the voting age.

Operation Register is the name for a series of symbolic protests YouthSpeak
will be having in February and/or March of this year.

All of the specifics have not been worked out yet. But here is a brief
summary of what is being planned.

1. 10-20 (or more) youth will go down to their county polling place together and try to vote.

2. The media will be alerted and cover the event.

3. This event will be repeated in as many cities as we can get volunteers.

Here is how we do an effective symbolic protest. First, members of
YouthSpeak, or non members volunteers agree to try to register to vote at
their local city or county building.

They should be under 18. 10-20 of them (or more!) in a particular city would
agree to go to the county courthouse on a particular day and try to register to vote.

The press (radio, tv, newspaper, etc) will be alerted.

The media loves a spectacle. The image of two dozen (or even 5 or 6) teens
determined to register to vote despite contrary state laws would surely be
covered by the news.

• It is possible for youth to win the right to vote.

• If youth do win the right to vote, real changes can be brought about:
  For example, an end to curfews and other discriminatory laws, greater say
  by young people in their own education (representation on school boards,
  etc).

In order to convince people we must first bring in a larger following.

How to Participate: Fill out the form or e-mail youthspeak@oblivion.net with the following information:

• Whether you would like to lead the campaign in your region

If you think any person in your high school or college would be interested
in participating in Operation Register tell them. Also if you know of an
organization in your high school or college that might be interested in
particpating, let them know. We need participation from every source we
can get it. Remember this is nonpartisan, so all political parties are
welcome to participate.
