HTP - Volume 4, Issue 2 - March 1999Grade 9!!
So, yet another body of grade 9 students are among us, what’s going through their minds, what do they think of us, the school, the people, each other? One grade 9 student sneaks among them to find out, and here are her results. In the following article, I’m going to write some of the questions I asked, what the majority answered and maybe pepper it with some delightful quips and opinions. Me- Hello, can I ask you some questions? Majority- ‘yeah’, ‘sure’, ‘yes’, ‘okay’ etc. One person who shall remain nameless- ‘drop dead fucker.’ Me- ‘So, what do y’all think of this school?’ Thea Barber- ‘This school sucks, too many Ginos and the halls smell like pee.’ Majority- ‘It’s a big change from last year’ or ‘same as last year, the school still sucks’ Me- Oh! Some of you went here last year? Small amount of people- ‘yeah’, ‘sadly yes’, ‘what’s it to you?’ Me- ‘Ooookay, well, who’s the best teacher you’ve had so far this year?’ There were three main teachers 1. Mr. Ellis, 2. Mrs. Hopwood-Jones, 3. Mr. Li (okay, so I added that one, do you have a problem?) My fellow classmate Alex said -"Mr. Ellis kicks ass!". But then, to her, everything else does too…has anyone else noticed his name? Mr. D. Ellis? Mr. Ellis D? Mr. LSD?……never mind. Me- ‘Worst teacher? I won’t say who said’ (I lied.) 1. Mme. Sousa, 2. Mrs. Tickner tied with Mr. Walker, 3. Mr. Li (shut up…) Me- ‘Do you like school? I mean, not the Woodlands, but school in particular?’ All- Hearty laughter shakes various tables Me- Don’t laugh. All- The laughter abruptly stops. Pause. Me- ‘Has anyone failed any courses?’ majority- ‘no’ about 40 % of those interviewed HAD in fact failed a course! Me- ‘Does anyone feel any less then older students’ Some people answered that -‘yeah, definitely, they don’t say anything, but you can tell that they’re thinking ‘minor niner’. - or something similar. Me-‘So you feel intimidated?!’ -Silence. Me- I’ll just drop that…. Now, I’m going to post some quotes and things that I’ve just heard around the school from various grade 9s. "I like the girls here"- Brian Tan "teachers here actually know what they’re talking about, but they still suck" - Rachel DeYoung "Damn, My school last year was nothing like this, it was WAY better"- Samantha Orozco "There’s so many hot guys!"- Jenn Dunn "N Sync rocks!"- Louise Chan "I’m transferring out. Now."- Colin Holmstead "I like school!"- me (not this one…) "Shut up Sarah"- everyone "See, it’s not school that’s so bad, it’s the school environment, the people and the building, it’s so repetitive everyday!"- Ashley Tamminga Me- ‘So in retrospect, what was better, last year or this year?’ 50%- last year 50% this year Me- What? Half and half? Who wants to break the tie? Duckman a.k.a. Adam Say- me. I like this year. Me- What do you expect to get out of the school year? Various people- ‘8 credits’ ‘To get out, literally ‘A boyfriend’ ‘I want to die’ These are basically the school related questions I asked this year, I asked some other things and found that a hot bands with the grade nines are: N sync (Thanks to Louise Chan for that) ; 5ive; The BSB; DMX; some other rap bands I’ve never heard of. Going further, I found a liking for: Radiohead(yeah!); Hanson ( I thought they were dead!); Goo Goo Dolls and Sarah McLachlen. I concluded that aside from Radiohead, the grade 9s have BAD TASTE! The sport of the 9ers is basketball with hockey at a close second, the Raptors and the Leafs were both number one in their respective sports (homegrown!). But I ask "where’s the soccer? Huh? CHELSEA KICKS!". Other things I found were that most of the grade nines HAVE tampered with drugs, alcohol and smoking, and a small number with sex. Shame, shame. BAD! I also found that we have some really smart people, when I came here, the first person I saw was uh…..nameless…… and I thought ‘oh great, these kids are stupid’, but we do have some intelligent people. Overall, no one is really enjoying this school and Thea Barber has an explanation. "The kids are too dumb, and old teachers don’t retire fast enough. Oh yeah, and I want more money.". But, isn’t that always her answer? GRADE NINES ARE TOO NEGATIVE! Cheer up! Seriously, you have to put up with another three, or four years! I personally can’t wait to get out, out of these pee smelling halls, the masses of ‘social gatherings’ in the middle of the halls when I’m walking, the endless barrage of dumb people, but, BUT! I’m not griping! Well, I am, but, who’s writing here? HUH? I’ll leave you with this, PLEASE, don’t provoke the Grade 9s, their minds and will are very weak, they may snap at any second, give us time, and by grade 10, we’ll join the rest of you, hopeless and messed up, watching a fresh batch of Grade 9s go through the EXACT SAME THING!
