HTP - Volume 3, Issue 5 - June 1998Post-Devastation
One popular rumour flying around the school was that part of the reason the administration cracked down so hard on the DX was the presence of a U of T representative at the election assembly. Apparently the University rep was so disgusted by our school that Mr. Pirk felt it necessary to do something to protect The Woodlands' image. This is all of course, pretty much totally unconfirmed, but I'd like to think it was true. One of our articles from last issue, The Prefect Drug, seemed to hit a nerve with our school's favourite elitist organization. Almost immediately after it was printed a group of Prefects turned on one of their fellow members, accusing him/her of assisting HTP in the writing of the article. Ironically this display of pettiness seems only to support the somewhat negative picture of the Prefects depicted in the article. Also it was rumoured that the Prefects were working on writing some kind of rebuttal, but this piece of writing has never materialised. The only direct response we received was from Prefect staff sponsor Mrs. Quinn who accused the article of being "full of lies", but, in a clever arguing strategy, refused to cite any examples of our alleged inaccuracies. The failing of the Prefects in this situation is their apparent inability to distinguish between "unflattering" and "untrue". In another Prefect related item, our story about the school sign met with some interesting feedback. One teacher allegedly involved in the sign incident was reportedly quite angry, although the article in fact seemed to disprove the claims that he/she had stolen money from the Prefects. Also, our original source for the story said that our interpretation of the events was incorrect. Apparently the sign was not sold to our school at an inflated price, but rather at cost, i.e. a much lower price, with somebody pocketing the difference. Another important detail of this version is that some teachers at our school were apparently good friends with somebody at the sign company. I case you might think I am trying to suggest that teachers have stolen money from our school, I would just like say that I, Don McHoull, totally do not believe this, to the extent that I would vouch for it with my life. Finally an article about HTP appeared our official school paper, the Woodchips, which included an interview with Mr. Pirk. Apparently Mr. Pirk still thinks our publication is "libellous" and that it contains "inappropriate language", but he has more important things to do than "waste time on this situation." Shortly afterwards it was announced that Mr. Pirk is retiring after this year. Nuff said.
