This page houses summaries of every SAC meeting held during the school year 1996-97. Except for a few of the ones near the end of the year when everything went a bit crazy. They are listed in reverse order, so if you want the complete experience, wait for the page to load, scroll down to the bottom and work your way up. Let the subtle wit of our SAC volunteers massage your angst.
05/06/97
No meeting. Missed bus for nothing. Stupid Mr. Hedges.
29/05/97
The entire meeting was taken up by a fund raising guy, who talked about his
plan to sell student price cards. These would not be like the student price
cards sold in the past, though they will cost the same amount (five
dollars). Card will not just be sold to students, but by students to their
friends and neighbours. Half of the five dollar fee will go to our school,
while the other half will go to taxes and the company producing the cards.
In addition our school will receive one hundred cards for free. The fund
raising guy talked a lot about getting students involved by giving them fat
wads of money and/or having teacher humiliate themselves. In general the
executive seemed to be pretty well sold on the idea, so look for it next year.
15/5/97
Nothing happened. All time attendance low of thirteen, including eight new
executives.
8/5/97
No meeting due to ballot counting.
1/5/97
Nothing happened. Well there is a dance next week, but who cares? Not me,
thats for sure.
8/4/97 Special Edition:
The Candidates meetings was held today, despite the fact that the
deadline for nominations has been extended to tomorrow. As of yet
there are no candidates for President, though according to Mr. Hedges,
three students have expressed interest. Maehdi, who did not attend,
seems to be out of the picture, with Mr. Hedges making several marks
seemingly directed towards him such as "This is a school first. Your
job here is to get good grades." The meeting was largely chaotic, so
information at this point is still somewhat lacking. Here is the
updated break down.
President
- Jim Provost*
- Morgan Shim*
- Someone else, not Maehdi
Senior VP
- Mike Vasilakeris
- Gita Gulati
Treasurer
Secretary
Communications Officer
- Hedi Shukla
- Andrea George
Senior Social Convenor
- Nisa Ally
- Don McHoull
- Allegedly 2 other people
Intermediate VP
Recycling Rep
Comunications Officer will not be voted on by the Student body, but
selected by a panal including Mr. Hedges, the new and old executives
and the Administration. Since no grade seven or eight students have
come forward, Junior positions will be choosen in September in a
special election. Mr. Hedges thinks that this will be better, since
now new grade seven students will be able to select representives for
their current year. Our school has the best locker system in Peel, so
Hedges advises against trying to change it. An issue that Hedges
thinks is a good one is the RAM shop, which saw its profits cut in
half from last year, falling to four thousand dollars.
The Woodchips has offered to print a one hundred word manifesto from
each student running for a position. HTP is making a similar offer, so
email us for details. The new executive will start work immediately
creating next years budget. Another major task will be Lock Collection
Day, which accounts for sixty percent of the SAC's income. A final
quote from Mr. Hedges, "As an executive, nobody will appreciate you." (Approx. running time 35 minutes)
24/4/97
This meeting was conducted entirely in the hall, and was not that much of a meeting. The Deadline for nomination forms is extended through Tuesday, because no students from the junior grades are running as of yet. Below is a rough summary of who is running:
| President | Senior Vice President | Treasurer | Senior Social Convenor |
| Jim Provost | Jackie Pangilinan | George Chu | Nisa Ally |
| Maehdi Rahman* | Morgan Shim* | Ryan Kennedy | Don McHoull |
* Not confirmed
(Approx. running time: not a real meeting)
17/4/97
First up the low down on the Election. With less than a week to go before
nomination forms are due, a grand total of six students are confirmed as
running for executive positions. The positions currently selected are
Secretary and Treasurer with one candidate each, and senior and intermediate
Vice President, with two candidates each. Mr. Hedges is considering opening
up eligibility requirements a bit because "students tend to get upset when
there isn't much of an election." It now seems that students with minimal
experience within the SAC, or experience with another executive organisation
will be eligible, though Hedges said that he didn't want an executive
comprised entirely of these students.
As has been the norm for most recent weeks, only three members of the
executive presided over this meeting (Vu, Morgan and Jackie.) Despite
rumours that he was planning to succeed Vu as president, Mehdi was no where
to be seen. Fifteen additional students were in attendance, including three
grade eight girls who sat in the back and heckled Vu about the Grade Eight
graduation. The rest of the audience was fairly quiet, allowing the meeting
to proceed smoothly.
Beginning next week, the Ram shop will be open only on Fridays, for a
variety of reasons. Largely it is because of the "no food in the halls"
policy. Since the Ram shop opens into the hall, and sells food, it seems to
be in conflict with the above mentioned policy. Other reasons for the
restricted hours are that nobody wants to run the Ram shop and it attracts
what Vu described as "rowdy little kids." Next year the Ram shop will close
permanently, or be relocated (See last week's summary)
The SAC are planning a "Wunder Grad" where everyone will have to dress in
yellow, for a cost of $32 per person plus transportation. Also in the
planning stage is a dance, to be held on May 9th. In a rather crufty
publicity stunt, the SAC election winners will be announced during the
dance. That should raise the attendance by about six people. Ha Ha Ha. Also
there will be a Spirit week during Education week, which is the week of the
election. Despite promises made last week, neither juice nor cookies were
served during this meeting. (Approx. running time 1500 seconds)
10/4/97
From now on the RAM shop will only be open only on Fridays, since there have
been so few volunteers to run it in past weeks. Next year the RAM shop may
not be open at all, or according to a plan proposed by Mr. Hedges, it may
move to the PALS room. This would involve a hole being cut in the wall
between the Cafeteria and the PALS room. Very few students seem to have
picked up SAC nomination forms, and fewer than twenty students attended this
meeting.
Next week President Vu will generously provide all students attending
the SAC meeting with juice and cookies. This adds to the list of food stuffs
received by SAC members this year, which already includes both pizza and
banana splits.(Approx. running time 20 min)
3/4/97
SAC nomination forms will be available next Monday in the SAC office. There
will be ten executive positions, open to any students who have attended SAC
meetings since September, with the exception of the position of President,
which will also require a year of experience as a member of the executive of
a school organization, ie SAC, Prefects, MAC, WAA etc. What a crazy run on
sentence that was. Some other stuff probably happened, but I can't remember
any of it. (Approx. running time 10 min)
27/3/97
Ditto.
20/3/97
Nothing new.
6/3/97
Financially speaking, Spirit Week was quite a success, with both Crepe Day and Bring your own Banana Day making profits of more than one hundred dollars. To celebrate this, the executive prepared free Banana Splits for everyone at the meeting. Attendance was at an all time low of twelve, but the free desert attracted quite a dew additional people, most if whom were
refused service on the grounds that they had never attended a prior SAC meeting. (Approx. running time 20 min.)
27/2/97
This meeting dealt exclusively with spirit week, which will be next week. A summary of planned events follows, in handy chart form.
| Monday | Tuesday | Wednesday | Thursday | Friday |
| Disco Dance Off | PJ day, crepe making | Tricycle Racing | Bring your own Banana | Club Day |
(Approx. running time 20 min)
20/2/97
The only new topic of discussion at this week's meeting concerned a
non-event. Originally the SAC had planned to hold a match making event on
Valentine's Day. Details of this event are slim, since it was never
mentioned at any SAC meeting. Allegedly this event was cancelled by the
administration to avoid complaints from parents, particularly those of "a
certain ethnic group" as stated by Mehdi. The cancellation came at the
last minute, after the SAC had already invested time and money in
preparation. In other news concerning failed SAC events, the grade seven
and eight dance, which will no longer be called Lounging, has been very
tentatively rescheduled for the 28th of February. Discussion of this ill
fated dance fell mainly on deaf ears, since grade seven and eight attendance
at this meeting was very poor. Attendance at this meeting was poor all
round, though not as poor as last week. (Approx. running time 20 min)
13/2/97
The first SAC meeting of the new year was marred by poor attendance. Less
than twenty students were in attendance, including two members of the
executive and eight home form reps. The meeting also began about ten minutes
late. All in all, I would have to say that this meeting was a disappointed
start to the new year. Moving on to actual business, Heart-o-gram sales have
been good. On February 28th, there will be a club day. Those of you who can
remember things well, will remember that this idea was first raised on
October tenth of last year, and than never mentioned again. So in terms of
club days, everything is now better than it was.
After all of that, talk turned to the next spirit week. Suggestions for this
event included karaoke, tricycle racing, and a pyjama day. Students urged
the SAC to modify the tricycle racing concept to bicycle racing, starting a
safety related debate. Luckily a well timed dose of the circle game defused
any potential hostility, and everyone left happily.
(Approx. running time 15 min)
19/12/96
As always, the SAC party proved to be quite the affair. Somewhat poor
attendance ensured that there was lots of pizza to go around. The SAC
conducted an opinion poll of attending members, which amounted to more of a
token gesture than anything else.
(Approx. running time N/A )
12/12/96
Next week's meeting will be held in room 221, as it will be the SAC party,
and not an actual meeting. Attendance is open to anyone who has attended SAC
meetings regularly throughout the year.
(Approx. running time 5 min)
5/12/96
Try as I might, I can't think of a single notable thing that happened at this meeting.
(Approx. running time 15 min)
28/11/96
The trip to Scooter's is cancelled. Again.
(Approx. running time 5 min)
21/11/96
Evidently tired of yelling at the crowd, the SAC executives came to this meeting packing a number of shiny whistles. Fortunately for people who don't like whistles, the crowd of students attending this meeting was both small and well behaved. No exact head count was taken, but there couldn't have been more than thirty students in attendance. This meeting was mainly focused on updating points brought up at past meetings. Firstly, the fund raiser for Sick Kids will be held some time in March. This next point will come as something of a surprise to all of you I am sure. Scooters roller rink is back. Scooters, as you may recall, was first brought up some time back in September, and a month later was defeated in a vote after Morgan accused Scooters of "scamming us." Anyway, it seems that SAC are strangely drawn to Scooters like iron filling to a magnet. The tentative date for this roller skating excursion is December the 13th. The details are the same as always, 3 to 6, $ 6, bus provided, etc. Enough of that, how about some information on the semi formal. As you may recall from last week, the cost of a ticket was set at $28. This week the cost has risen to $32, or $60 for a couple or an undisclosed amount for an entire table. There was actually a vote held to decide this, and here is the exciting vote play by play; At first there were two options, a flat rate of $30 or the above mentioned $32/$60 package. A student then suggested that students be allowed to purchase tickets in blocks of five, an idea which the SAC executive liked. Expanding this suggestion to the above mentioned option to purchase an entire table, it was added to the list as option three. A vote was then held, and option three came out on top over options one and two by a score of more than six to six to three. At this point someone pointed out that the vote was invalid, since not all students would want to purchase an entire table, and therefor option three should not be a separate option, but combined with either option one or two. So that's how the current semi formal price scheme was arrived at. Moving on from that exciting topic, we hit another old favourite, fluctuating jacket costs. Regular followers of the SAC summary will recall that the cost of SAC jackets has changed from $20 to $25 to $20 again. Well hold on to your hat, because jacket costs have just risen to $31.45 with a name, or $28 without. No explanation was given for this steep increase in price, but if you still want a jacket you need to give your money and order form to Roberta Lam by next Thursday. Speaking of next Thursday, the SAC meeting will be held in room 122, since the lecture hall will be needed for the second performance of You Can't Take It With You. (Approx. running time 20 minutes)
14/11/96
This meeting was pretty much a waste of time. The only new point raised concerned the semi formal. The semi formal will be held at Roma's Palace, and will cost $28 per person. Unlike last year's semi formal, this year there will be waiters, not a buffet. A $10 deposit will be collected sometime during the next two weeks. The rest of the meeting consisted mainly of Communications officer Mahedi yelling at the students to shut up, and a group of hecklers calling Mahedi a "crack whore." (Approx. running time 15 minutes)
7/11/96
First I will quickly summarise the events discussed at this meeting. Next Friday there will be a bowling trip, leaving the school at 3:30 and returning at 6:00. The cost will be between $6 and $8. At some point in the future, there will be a Loonie drive to raise money for Sick Kid's Hospital. On December 6th, there will a Pancake breakfast. All your favourite SAC executives will be there, cooking pancakes and selling them for a dollar (per pancake? I don't know, the SAC executive wouldn't say, but $1 per Pancake seems slightly expensive). Two weeks from now, the SAC will be selling student price cards in the Cafe for $6. These are the same price cards that we used to get for free as part of SAC membership, back when SAC membership fees weren't so ridiculously high. The Drama club will be selling tickets to the play You Can't Take It With You for $5 with an SAC card or $6 without. The play will be running at our school November 27 through November 29. The SAC will not be holding any dances in the near future, but there will be a Prefect charity dance. The School Mascot, an idea first introduced at an SAC meeting has been taken up by the WAA. Starting in December, they will be attempting to raise the $800 that a mascot would cost our school.
When all the official business was concluded, president Vu asked the assembled students what they thought about recent changes proposed to the education system. Several students at the back of the room suggested that a walkout be held to protest. One of these students also remarked that he didn't really care about the issue, he just "wanted a day off school." Another student then suggested that the SAC get in contact with SACs from all around Peel and organise an enormous walkout. At this point the meeting became nothing but a violent argument between several students with conflicting opinions on the issue. (Approx. running time 30 minutes)
31/10/96
The first order of business was the Purification Committee. Despite
its slightly alarming name, this brand new committee will serve to improve
the appearance and atmosphere of our school. Student representation on
the Purification Committee will be in the form of one SAC member and one
Prefect. Anyone seeking more information about this should contact Ms.
Paulson, who will be heading the project. Following this, a list was made
of students wishing to purchase SAC jackets. What came next was something
of a surprise, as Scooters was brought up for the fifth week in a row.
It seemed like Scooters was out of the picture last week, when Social Convenor
Morgan had accused them of scamming us, but Scooters just seems to keep
bouncing back like a bouncy rubber ball. At this point in the meeting,
a vote was held, and students were given the choice between Scooters and
bowling. The SAC executive lost count of the number of votes, so a second
vote was held, in which Bowling defeated Scooters by a margin of 16 votes
to 12. The date for the bowling trip will be November 15, and the cost
will be about six dollars per person for two hours of non-stop bowling
fun. In case you were wondering, the cost for two hours at Scooters would
have been ten dollars. The final item of the day was the Fashion Show.
Contrary to popular belief, the Fashion Show will not be an official SAC
event, but instead will be run independently with some SAC support. Volunteers
are needed, not necessarily to be models, but to organise the entire event.
Interested students should listen to the announcements for more details.
(Approx. running time 20 min)
24/10/96
First on the agenda were Halloween events. There will be Pumpkin carving
in the Caf, for teams of one to three students. Interested students can
sign up at the SAC office. There will also be a Chug-A-Lug contest, involving
the consumption of large amounts of Kool-Ade. There will be three rounds
to the contest, with the winner being whoever is able to drink the most
Kool-Ade. After a month of planning, the outing to Scooters has been canceled,
because Scooters had not been honest with us. The rate they mentioned was
actually an hourly rate, and did not include skate rentals. On a positive
note, the price of SAC jackets is now $20 with a name on the front, not
$25 as originally stated. The Semi-Formal will probably be held at Roma's
Palace, and a $10 deposit will be due in mid November. Nothing has been
done concerning the School mascot, with the SAC saying that this a matter
for the WAA. Also the Goth Dance idea has been turned downed by the SAC,
as they claim that the Administraion have forbiden it.When questions were
raised about future dances, the SAC replied that the Administration had
been upset by grade seven students hiding in the school and sneaking into
the last dance, and so there would be no dances in the imediate future.
Of the executive, only Morgan and Jackie attended this meeting, and both
seemed very eager to leave. (approx, running time 15 min)
17/10/96
This meeting was conducted mainly by president Vu, and it ran fairly
smoothly. The first order of business was the recruitment of volunteers
to work in the RAM shop, an event which will become a regular part of all
future SAC meetings. With that taken care of, the next item was SAC events
for Halloween. Events planned so far are a pumpkin carving contest, and
a "chug-a-lug" contest. It was not explained exactly what a chug-a-lug
contest would entail, but speculation in the crowd ran rampant. The date
for the trip to Scooter's will be November 15, with the SAC providing bussing.
The students were asked if they would be interested in buying tickets to
a Raptors game, but when it was announced that the tickets would be for
the 500 level, and
would cost $30 the reaction was negative. Students complained that $30
was too high a price for 500 level seats, and suggestions were made that
such seats could be bought for a much lower price.
The next event was an historic one as the first vote of the year was
held. Students were asked if they were in favour of the SAC holding a talent
show. No exact count of voters was taken, but the majority of students
seemed to favour the idea. At this point, the topic turned to the creation
of an official school mascot. Two students had already volunteered for
the job, but no progress had been made in finding someone to make the costume.
It was then suggested that the SAC should offer song requests in the Caf
at lunch for a dollar. The SAC executive said that this would not be possible,
as playing music in the Caf was too controversial. A small debate over
this point ensued, and eventually the SAC said that they would consider
a system in which a different radio station was played in the Caf each
day. Another suggestion raised was a free dance that would make money by
charging a fast food restaurant for the right to sell food inside the dance.
(Approx. running time 25 min)
10/10/96
Less than half the SAC executive were actually in attendance, leaving
Jenny Ho to essentially conduct the meeting on her own. From the very start
she was overpowered by the large and enthusiastic crowd of students attending
the meeting, and any semblance of order was soon lost. The first order
of business was the repetition of the previous week's announcement that
Home Form reps were responsible for recycling. Next it was announced that
SAC jackets would be available for sale at the price of twenty dollars.
A quick survey of students attending the meeting showed that many students
were interested in purchasing a jacket, but when the price of jackets was
written on the board as twenty-five dollars, students reacted angrily.
It was then quickly explained that while the basic cost of a jacket was
twenty dollars, an extra five dollars could be paid to have a name put
on the front of the jacket. After this, the SAC announced its plans for
a club day, in which various clubs would be given booths in the cafeteria.
Students were asked to report back to any clubs they might belong to and
tell them about this. A preliminary date has been set as some time this
month.
For the second week in a row it was announced that Scooters roller rink
would be offering half price skating to large groups of Woodlands students,
with the clarification that a large group means a minimum of fifty students.
The issue of the semi formal was brought up very briefly, but the topic
was quickly changed with the suggestion that our school should have a mascot.
This suggestion was met by enthusiastic cheering on the part of the students,
and a reply by the SAC executive that the family studies department would
be asked to look into this issue. At this point a group of students took
control of the SAC blackboard in order to propose that a Goth Dance should
be held. The SAC executive looked somewhat puzzled as the assembled students
cheered loudly. Confused grade seven students began to rush to the exits,
and soon after the meeting reverted into chaos and confusion. (Approx.
running time 30 min)
3/10/96
This was the shortest SAC meeting yet. The main points brought up were;
- All Home Form Reps are now required to serve as Recycling Reps. Recycling
reps will be called down at the end of the week.
- Scooters roller rink will offer half price skating to Woodland students,
provided that there are a large number of them skating.
- SAC members are urged to turn in any non-SAC members who are using
school lockers.
- Home Form reps should get suggestions from there classes about what
they want the SAC to do.
- The Semi-Formal will be held on February 14 or 15, with a deposit due
in late October.
- SAC members are needed to work in the Ram Shop.
(approx. running time 10 min)
26/09/96
Meeting cancelled.
19/09/96
The first order of business was the appointment of a Recycling Co-ordinator.
It was then announced that the Funk Phenomena had made a total of $92 profit.
President Vu blamed this slightly disappointing result on expensive DJs.
Home Form reps were then asked to solicit suggestions for the semi formal
from their classes. The floor was then opened for questions, a summary
of which follows;
(Q) Why are there flies in the Cafeteria?
(A) It's not our fault.
(Q) Why aren't there any more movie days?
(A) Mr. Pirk doesn't like movie days.
(Q) When will the students cards be ready?
(A) Next week.
As a final note before the end of the meeting, it was announced that
only SAC members will be allowed to work in the Candy Shop. (Approx. running
time 20 min)
12/09/96
The first meeting of the year, so not much happens. After the Executive
are introduced, Jennifer Ho leads the assembled SAC members in a rousing,
yet time consuming round of the Squeegee Hunt chant, complete with hand
gestures. This is followed by a p oorly organised and time consuming roll
call, and the distribution of attendance forms. At this point Senior Social
Convenor Morgan Shim attempts to recruit volunteers for the Funk Phenomena
by offering a bribe of free tickets. The meeting is then adjourned, resulting
in a free ticket inspired melee at the volunteering table. (Approx. running
time 30 min)
