HTP - The Cutting Room FloorUntitled/Unfinished (The Woodchips sucks)Submitted for Issue 3 Volume 2
As the co-editor of this publication, I faced a problem that I'm sure most organisations in this school are on intimate terms with: student laziness. As a result, our much talley-hoed pre election issue was not published. Another problem I encountered last week was the forth issue of the "Woodchips", our official school newspaper. While it's production did consume a great deal of paper (C.R.F. note- ha ha ha , the Woodchips sucks!), this little baby seemed to be mighty short in what a person might actually term news. A fat chunk of the ten page bulk went towards what was essentially free advertising for candidates in the SAC election. If you take that away, what was left amounted to a few grainy pictures and a handful of largely irrelevant articles. Woodchips writers seemed to be simply hanging around waiting for Fei Lei to leave so they can take over her position as Editor, and in the mean time turn out churning oh so much hastily written fill just to keep their names in print. (we here at HTP know all about churning out hastily written fill) I like rap music as much as the next white, suburban male, but if I wanted to read about it I would buy a copy of Rap Pages. Coverage of the international bazaar was good if not particularly informative, and the review of the Philosophy course seemed somewhat out of place on the first page. The entire back page was taken up Fei Lei, who Fei Lei's main point in defence of the refugee motif comment was that it was stolen from a popular movie. So stealing from a popular movie somehow exonerates the writer of any responsibility? I thought that It was the role of the editor to decide what is or is not suitable for print, and not the director of popular films, but what do I know? I'm just a white person, and white people are very stupid. I stole that joke from the movie , so hey it must be okay. (ideally, I would have found an actual joke about white people from a popular movie, but this would have taken too much effort) HTP would never use the word "refugee" just to get a few cheap laughs. Many of my ancestors were refugees. (not true) Why should we make fun of people for having the simple misfortunate of being born in an oppressive country and having the courage to flee to our own. So what if refugees tend to be somewhat dishevelled? I think that anyone would be a bit dishevelled if they had to gather up there few meagre belongings and seek refuge from a life of poverty and injustice. In a similarly unfortunate circumstance, most people living in China are illiterate. Does this mean that in writing a review of a popular novel a person could say "This novel is so poorly written that it has almost a
Why we didn't print it: I decided that it wasn't very good, since I had written it mainly out of anger at the Woodchips for a) not letting us take them over & b) intentionally messing up my candidate photo. This the first paragraph is a satire of the famous article from the first issue of the Woodchips, which Fei Lei wrote about HTP. The second paragraph doesn't really fit with the first at all, and was just an attempt to incorprate what was a hot issue at the time, that being the "refugee motif" controversy. I like the part about racist comment being ok if you steal them from popular movies, but thats about it.
